FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Eureka, CA – October 14, 2024
The North Coast Progressive Alliance strongly opposes the ballot initiative Measure F in Eureka, California in the upcoming November 5th Election. Measure F will negatively exacerbate the housing crisis in an already housing-short community by halting 6 affordable housing projects, as well as a transit center in climate friendly locations near jobs and essential services.
Measure F would restrict development on 21 city-owned parking lots in Old Town Eureka, by requiring any construction of high-density housing to retain the current number of parking spaces. This would require housing to be built over ground-level parking structures, effectively making the sites too expensive for the construction of affordable housing.
Measure F would rezone the Jacobs Middle School campus to allow for affordable housing. What proponents of Measure F fail to mention is that this property is owned by the Eureka City School District, who is currently in negotiations with California Highway Patrol to sell the property.
Measure F would put the city of Eureka at risk of legal consequences from the state, for failure to meet state requirements to build a certain number of affordable housing units. This would put the city at risk of lawsuits as well as cuts in funding to important programs.
The North Coast Progressive Alliance firmly believes in the need for affordable housing in Humboldt County. As such, the NCPA urges residents of Eureka, California to vote NO on F. Measure F is bad for the housing crisis, bad for Eureka, and bad for Humboldt.
